Angola 1.000 Kwanzas

The Banco Nacional de Angola issued the 1,000 Kwanzas banknote in November 2023 as part of the ongoing modernization of Angola's currency with polymer substrate materials. The pink-colored note features Kalandula waterfalls, one of Africa's highest waterfalls located on the Lucala River in Malanje Province, with a fall height of approximately 105 meters and a width of 400 meters. These waterfalls represent Angola's natural landmarks and tourism assets.

The polymer construction ensures superior durability compared to traditional paper notes, extending the banknote's circulation lifespan to approximately four times longer than conventional fiber-based currency. The banknote incorporates two transparent windows cut into the polymer substrate: the first contains a semitransparent representation of O Pensador (The Thinker), a national cultural symbol representing Angolan intellectual heritage, with the denomination printed in translucent ink. The second window features a geometric figure representing the traditional musical instrument Omakola, reflecting Angolan cultural heritage and musical traditions.

Kalandula waterfalls, set within a national park of the same name, are the second largest waterfalls in Africa by volume of water and among the largest by width. Their inclusion on Angolan currency reflects the nation's pride in its spectacular natural geography. The polymer substrate and clear windows represent contemporary anti-counterfeiting advances adopted throughout Angola's modern banknote series.
