2.000 Kwanzas

The Banco Nacional de Angola issued the 2,000 Kwanzas banknote on November 11, 2020, as part of the comprehensive redesign of Angola's banknote series using polymer substrates. The green-colored note features Serra da Leba, a dramatic mountain pass in Huila Province renowned for its spectacular hairpin turns and scenic vista over the Namibe Desert below. The Serra da Leba road, engineered in 1971, is considered one of the most beautiful mountain roads in Africa and is a major tourist attraction.

The polymer material provides enhanced durability, environmental resistance, and counterfeit prevention compared to traditional paper notes. The banknote design incorporates two distinct transparent windows cut into the polymer substrate. The primary window features a semitransparent representation of O Pensador (The Thinker), a significant cultural emblem within Angolan artistic and intellectual traditions, with the denomination printed in translucent ink. A second geometric window represents the Omakola, a traditional Angolan musical instrument, celebrating the nation's rich musical heritage.

Serra da Leba's inclusion on Angola's highest-value polymer banknote reflects the significance of the Huila Province landscape in Angolan national identity. The Angolan 2,000 Kwanzas represents the highest denomination in the polymer series launched in 2020, and the choice of a mountain landscape symbolizes both natural grandeur and the heights of national aspiration.
