Australia 50 Dollars

The $50 banknote honors two pioneering figures who championed social change in Australia: David Unaipon, an Aboriginal inventor and the country's first published Aboriginal author from the Ngarrindjeri nation, and Edith Cowan, the first female member of an Australian parliament from Western Australia. The design incorporates cultural symbols including shields from Unaipon's Ngarrindjeri heritage and representations of miwi and navel cord exchange practices, alongside Acacia humifusa (Unaipon's totem) and the Black Swan, the official bird of Western Australia.

The reverse features a gumnut brooch symbolizing the difficulties women faced entering parliament, and the King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, which Cowan helped establish. The banknote employs cutting-edge security technology to combat counterfeiting while maintaining ease of recognition through unchanged color and size. A top-to-bottom clear window displays dynamic features including a reversing number and a flying bird, representing a significant advancement in Australian banknote technology.

David Unaipon's image has appeared on the $50 note since 1995, while Edith Cowan has featured on the reverse since the same year. The next-generation series introduced significantly enhanced security features including a new clear window and microprinting of excerpts from Unaipon's Legendary Tales of the Ngarrindjeri and Cowan's first parliamentary speech, ensuring these stories remain literally woven into the fabric of Australian currency.
