The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued the 20 KM note on July 27, 1998, as part of the higher-denomination set following the initial currency launch. The Federation variant (Latin script) honors Antun Branko Šimić (1898–1925), a pioneering Croatian expressionist poet whose experimental work transformed Croatian literature. Šimić's portrait represents the Croatian cultural contribution within Bosnia and Herzegovina's multi-ethnic heritage. The reverse displays Stećak Radimlja, medieval tombstones that serve as powerful symbols of Bosnia's historical continuity and artistic legacy. Like all BiH banknotes, this note exists in both Latin (Federation) and Cyrillic (Republika Srpska) variants, both fully legal tender. Current 2012+ issues remain in circulation.
