The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued the 50 KM note on July 27, 1998, as the highest denomination in the initial banknote release. The Federation variant features Musa Ćazim Ćatić (1878–1915), a pivotal Bosniak Muslim poet and intellectual whose literary contributions shaped modern Bosnian culture. The Republika Srpska variant features Jovan Dučić (1871–1943), a Bosnian Serbian poet and diplomat whose diplomatic efforts advanced South Slavic literature and political thought. The 50 KM reverse in the Cyrillic variant displays books, reading glasses, and a pen—symbols of literary heritage. The Federation version features Zgošća Stećak, another medieval tombstone. Both variants remain fully legal tender. Enhanced 2012+ issues are in circulation; pre-2012 notes ceased legal tender January 1, 2025.
