The 2022-dated Canadian 10 Dollar note is a print-run variant of the Vertical Series (eighth series) polymer banknote first released on 19 November 2018. Viola Desmond (1914–1965) was a Black Nova Scotian businesswoman and civil-rights pioneer who challenged racial segregation at a New Glasgow cinema in 1946 and was posthumously pardoned by the Province of Nova Scotia in 2010. She became the first Black Canadian woman, and the first Canadian other than royalty, to appear solo on a regular-issue Canadian banknote. The note also broke convention as the first Canadian banknote printed in vertical (portrait) orientation. It won the International Bank Note Society's Banknote of the Year Award for 2018.
