Colombia's 50,000-peso note was introduced by Banco de la República on 19 August 2016 and has continued in circulation through 2022 with updated signatures. It honours Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014), the Nobel laureate whose novel One Hundred Years of Solitude brought global fame to Colombian literature and culture. The obverse imagery alludes to Mauricio Babilonia, a character from that novel associated with yellow butterflies, while the reverse celebrates the pre-Columbian heritage of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The note was a 2016 nominee for the International Bank Note Society Banknote of the Year award.
