The 10,000-colón polymer note was introduced in 2019 and continues in circulation with a 2022 date and updated signatures. It honours José Figueres Ferrer (1906–1990), three-time president of Costa Rica, who famously abolished the country's military on 1 December 1948 and redirected defence spending to education and healthcare. The reverse celebrates Costa Rica's extraordinary biodiversity, featuring the three-toed sloth as a symbol of the country's tropical rainforests. The note employs the non-holographic KINEGRAM REVIEW foil stripe, making it highly resistant to counterfeiting.
