The 2,000-colón polymer note was introduced by Banco Central de Costa Rica in 2018 as part of the country's full transition to Guardian polymer substrate, a move completed across all denominations to improve durability and security. The 2022-dated version carries the same design with updated signatures. Mauro Fernández Acuña (1843–1905) is commemorated as the architect of Costa Rica's modern public education system and founder of the Colegio Superior de Señoritas, the first public secondary school for women in Central America. The reverse highlights a bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), a species found in Costa Rica's coastal waters.
