The 5 Cuban Peso note has been issued continuously since 1997 and the 2021-dated notes remained in circulation following Cuba's historic monetary unification on 1 January 2021, which abolished the convertible peso (CUC) and made the Cuban Peso (CUP) the sole legal tender. Antonio Maceo Grajales (1845–1896), known as the Bronze Titan, was second-in-command of the Cuban Army of Independence and is venerated as a national hero. The Protesta de Baragua, depicted on the reverse, represents Maceo's refusal to accept Spain's peace terms, becoming a symbol of uncompromising patriotism in Cuban history.
