100 Birr

The National Bank of Ethiopia released its 100 Birr note in 2023 as part of a modernized currency series. The note is dated Ethiopian Year 2015 (AD 2023) and bears the signature of Yinager Dessie. This blue denomination measures 147 mm x 72 mm and serves as a standard circulation banknote for the country's currency system.

The obverse side features a lion head and the Enqulab Gemb fortress located in Gondar, showcasing Ethiopia's rich medieval heritage. The fortress complex in Gondar was built in the 17th and 18th centuries and served as the royal seat of Ethiopian emperors, earning the city the nickname the Camelot of Africa. The reverse depicts the Sof Omar Caves and the historic walled city of Harar, emphasizing the nation's archaeological and architectural diversity across different regions.

The Sof Omar Caves form one of the most extensive cave systems in Africa, stretching over 15 kilometers through limestone mountains in the Bale region. The ancient walled city of Harar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is regarded as the fourth holiest city in Islam and home to over 80 mosques. Together these landmarks illustrate Ethiopia's extraordinary cultural and religious heritage spanning centuries.
