10 Dalasis

The Central Bank of The Gambia released the 10 Dalasis banknote in 2023 as the second denomination in its modernized 2019-2023 currency series. This green polymer note measures 127 mm x 65 mm and bears the signatures of Jallow and Saidy. The denomination continues the birds-themed series of Gambian banknotes, with each note showcasing native bird species representative of the country's remarkable avifauna.

The obverse features a dove bird perched on a tree branch and in flight, accompanied by two standing bush fowl birds as registration marks and the national coat of arms. The reverse depicts the Kunta Kinteh ferry, a significant Gambian vessel that connects Banjul to Barra across the River Gambia at its mouth, representing the nation's river transport heritage. The ferry crossing bears the name of Kunta Kinteh, the African slave whose story was told in Alex Haley's novel Roots.

The River Gambia is the defining geographical feature of the country, running its entire length from east to west. The ferry connection between Banjul and Barra represents one of the most important transport links in Gambia, connecting the capital with the northern regions of the country. Its depiction on the 10 Dalasis note underscores the river's central role in Gambian daily life, culture, and national identity.
