100 Dalasis

The Central Bank of The Gambia issued the 100 Dalasis banknote in 2023 as one of the highest denominations in its modernized 2019-2023 currency series. This teal polymer note measures 135 mm x 74 mm and was printed by De La Rue with signatures from Buah Saidy and Dr. Abodulie Sireh Jallow. The denomination represents significant purchasing power in Gambian currency circulation.

The obverse features a black-crowned crane (Balearica pavonina) standing and in flight, with two standing bush fowl birds as registration marks and the national coat of arms. The black-crowned crane is a striking and culturally significant bird in West Africa, known for its golden crown and elaborate courtship dances. The reverse depicts three men in a traditional dugout canoe casting a fishing net on the River Gambia, illustrating the traditional fishing practices that have sustained Gambian communities for centuries.

The River Gambia fishery is central to the nation's food security and economy, with both artisanal and commercial fishing operations employing a significant portion of the population. The black-crowned crane has historical significance in Gambian culture and is listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss across its West African range. Its prominent placement on the 100 Dalasis note reflects conservation awareness alongside cultural celebration.
