50 Dalasis

The Central Bank of The Gambia released the 50 Dalasis banknote in 2023 as part of its 2019-2023 modernized currency series. This purple polymer note measures 125 mm x 65 mm and bears the signatures of Buah Saidy and Dr. Abodulie Sireh Jallow. The denomination represents the mid-to-higher value notes in the series and continues the birds-themed design approach.

The obverse side features an osprey (Pandion haliaetus) bird of prey perched on a tree branch and in flight, with two standing bush fowl birds as registration marks and the national coat of arms. The osprey is a widespread raptor found on Gambian rivers and coastline, known for its dramatic plunge-diving fishing technique. The reverse depicts the Wassu stone circles, an important archaeological site dating from the 8th century AD located in the North Bank Region of Gambia.

The Wassu stone circles are part of the Senegambian Stone Circles UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprising over 1,000 monuments consisting of stone circles, burial mounds, and tumuli spread across Senegal and Gambia. These circles were constructed between the 8th and 16th centuries AD by the ancestors of present-day inhabitants, representing one of the largest concentrations of megalithic sites on Earth and a significant marker of the region's pre-colonial civilizations.
