100 Quetzales
The Banco de Guatemala issued a commemorative 100 Quetzales banknote in 2025 (dated 08.10.2025) celebrating two significant milestones: the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the Banco de Guatemala and the 350th anniversary of the University of San Carlos de Borromeo, founded in 1676 in Antigua. The front of the note features Bishop and university founder Francisco Marroquín, a flying quetzal bird (Guatemala's national symbol), a flag, the Mayan numeral for 100, and Spanish text, rendered in brown, purple, green, blue, and red colors.
The reverse depicts the architectural heritage of the University of San Carlos with imagery of flower beds, fountain, and columned pillars from the courtyard of the university building in Antigua, emphasizing Guatemala's cultural and educational heritage. A green-to-gold color-shifting security device displays "80 / AÑOS" (80 years), commemorating the Banco de Guatemala's octave of service to the nation. The banknote measures 156 × 67 mm and was produced by PWPW S.A., with a total circulation of 15 million notes printed to ensure widespread availability of this commemorative issue.
This dual-anniversary note interweaves Guatemala's banking and educational institutions, both foundational pillars of the nation's development and institutional stability.
