The Banque de la République d'Haïti issued the 250 Gourdes banknote in 2023 featuring Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806), the revolutionary leader who proclaimed Haiti's independence from France on January 1, 1804, and served as the nation's first ruler. Dessalines, born into slavery, rose to become a military general who led the decisive campaigns of the Haitian Revolution, culminating in the Battle of Vertieres in November 1803 — the final major battle that secured Haitian independence. He declared himself Emperor Jacques I in 1805 before being assassinated in 1806.

The reverse depicts Fort Décidé near Marchand Dessalines (now Dessalines), representing Haiti's military heritage and the defensive fortifications that protected the nation's newfound independence. Fort Décidé was among the structures associated with Dessalines' efforts to consolidate Haitian sovereignty and defend against potential European re-colonization. The banknote is printed in blue on tan and brown underprint, creating a visually distinctive appearance for this highest-denomination commemorative note.

Jean-Jacques Dessalines is revered as the Father of the Haitian Nation, and his legacy remains central to Haitian national identity.
