Haiti 250 Gourdes / Goud

The 2023 issue of the 250 Gourdes is a bilingual commemorative note issued by the Banque de la République d'Haïti. Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806) defeated the French forces and proclaimed Haitian independence on 1 January 1804, subsequently governing as Governor-General and then Emperor Jacques I. Fort Décidé, depicted on the reverse, was one of seven fortifications Dessalines ordered constructed in 1805 around his new capital Marchand to defend the republic against French retaliation, making the note's imagery a direct tribute to his dual role as liberator and builder of the Haitian state.
