The 500 gourdes note honors Alexandre Pétion (1770–1818), who co-led the southern republic after Haiti's independence and served as its first elected president. Fort Jacques (1804), visible on the reverse, was constructed immediately after independence to defend Haiti against potential French reconquest. The 2021 date reflects a re-issue of the long-running series with updated security features.
