The Reserve Bank of India introduced the 200 Rupee note on 25 August 2017 as part of the Mahatma Gandhi New Series — the first 200-rupee denomination in India's history — and the type continues with date and signature variants through 2026. The obverse carries the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi with the Lion Capital of Ashoka emblem; the reverse displays the Sanchi Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage site of ancient Buddhist architecture.
The note has a bright yellow base colour and measures 146 × 66 mm. Security features include a colour-shifting windowed security thread (green to blue when tilted), a Gandhi watermark with electrotype '200', colour-changing ink on the denomination numeral, micro-lettering, and a see-through register.
