The 1000 rupiah note belongs to the 2016 'National Heroes' series introduced by Bank Indonesia on 19 December 2016, when all rupiah denominations were simultaneously redesigned. Tjut Meutia (1848–1910) led guerrilla resistance in Aceh against Dutch colonial forces and was proclaimed a National Hero in 1964. Banda Neira, shown on the reverse, was the historic heart of the Spice Islands trade and a site of Dutch colonial rule. The 2021 date indicates the latest production year within the ongoing series.
