1.000.000 Rials

The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued the 1,000,000 Rials high-denomination cheque in 2023. This instrument features the sacred Fatima Masumeh Shrine in Qom on the obverse, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Shi'a Islam, visited by millions of pilgrims annually. The shrine is the burial place of Fatimah bint Musa, sister of the eighth Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha, and is considered the second holiest site in Iran after the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. The reverse depicts the South Pars / North Dome gas-condensate field, the world's largest natural gas field shared between Iran and Qatar, symbolizing Iran's immense energy wealth.

The note is predominantly blue with dimensions of 157 x 71 mm and is printed on cotton fiber paper. The 1,000,000 Rials is officially classified as a cheque rather than a traditional banknote, a distinction Iran uses for its highest-denomination instruments while they function identically to banknotes in circulation. The denomination is equivalent to 100 Toman in modern Iranian currency notation, reflecting the practical renaming of currency units that Iranians use in everyday transactions to simplify high-value amounts.

Iran's high-denomination currency instruments reflect the country's long-running inflation challenges, which have periodically required the issuance of ever-higher denominations for everyday transactions. The juxtaposition of a major Shi'a shrine with Iran's energy infrastructure on the same banknote reflects the dual pillars of the Islamic Republic — religious heritage and resource-based economic power.
