2.000.000 Rials

The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued the 2,000,000 Rials high-denomination cheque in 2023. The obverse prominently displays the Karoun 3 hydroelectric dam, a 205-meter-high arch dam located on the Karun River in Khuzestan province — the tallest dam in Iran and one of the most significant engineering achievements in the country's modern history. The dam, completed in 2005, generates approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity and represents Iran's commitment to renewable energy infrastructure and technical self-sufficiency.

The reverse features elaborate Persian calligraphy surrounded by traditional Islamic geometric patterns, reflecting Iran's extraordinary heritage in the art of calligraphy and decorative geometric design that has flourished for over a millennium. The banknote is printed in light blue, green, and yellow colors and measures 160 x 75 mm. Equivalent to 200 Toman in modern Iranian currency notation, this high-denomination cheque is produced by TAKAB (Iran's banknote printing company) for significant financial transactions.

The watermark features Ferdowsi (Hakim Abu'l-Qasim Firdawsi Tusi, 940-1020 AD), the celebrated Persian poet and author of the Shahnameh (Book of Kings), the epic poem of approximately 50,000 couplets that forms the foundation of Persian language and literature. Ferdowsi's presence as a watermark on this highest-denomination instrument symbolizes the profound cultural significance of Persian literary heritage to Iranian national identity alongside the modern infrastructure depicted in the primary design.
