Kyrgyzstan 50 Som

The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic issued the 50 Som banknote in 2023, entering circulation on February 15, 2024, as part of the second phase of the national currency modernization initiative. This orange note measures 126 mm x 61 mm. The obverse displays a portrait of Kurmanjan Datka (1811-1907), widely known as the Alai Tsaritsa (Queen of the Alai), an outstanding stateswoman and political leader who navigated the complex transition of Kyrgyz tribal society during the Russian Empire's expansion into Central Asia in the 19th century. Her diplomatic acumen and leadership earned her the title of Datka — the highest administrative rank in the Khanate system — from multiple rulers.

The reverse features the Uzgen architectural complex, one of the most important historical monuments along the Great Silk Road, comprising an 11th-12th century minaret and three mausoleums of the Karakhanid dynasty. Located in Osh Region, the complex represents the golden age of Islamic architecture in Central Asia and demonstrates the sophisticated artistic traditions of the Karakhanid rulers who governed much of the region between the 10th and 13th centuries.

Kurmanjan Datka's placement on the 50 Som note reflects Kyrgyzstan's recognition of female historical figures in its national narrative. Her story of negotiating Kyrgyz survival and cultural preservation under Russian colonial pressure has made her an enduring symbol of resilience and wisdom in Kyrgyz national consciousness.
