50 Maloti
The 50 Maloti banknote was released on December 23, 2021, featuring King Moshoeshoe I on the obverse along with the national coat of arms and Mokorotlo symbol. The reverse depicts traditional Basotho horse riders in indigenous dress riding across a mountainous landscape, celebrating the cultural significance of horsemanship in Lesotho's heritage. Measuring 138 mm x 70 mm, the note incorporates the RollingStar dynamic security thread that displays striking color-shifting and light effects, replacing the simpler Anima thread used in lower denominations. This advanced security feature shows brilliant visual dynamics between CBL letters and denomination markings when tilted or moved. Additional security elements include a watermark of King Moshoeshoe I wearing a top hat, tactile elements for the visually impaired, the Mokorotlo registration device, and anti-bacterial SICPA Protect varnish coating. Produced by De La Rue using sustainable ADDvance hybrid substrate, the 50 Maloti represents a significant step up in security within the 2021 series.
