Released in September 2022, the L$1,000 note is the highest denomination in the Central Bank of Liberia's modernized banknote series. Its blue, brown, and pink design celebrates Liberia's ethnic diversity by showcasing the ceremonial masks of 16 tribal groups: Kpelle, Dey, Gbandi, Gio, Vai, Kissi, Mano, Kru, Mandingo, Grebo, Krahn, Bassa, Gola, Mende, Lorma, and Belle. The note sparked controversy when the Sarpo tribe sued the central bank for omitting their tribal mask from the design. The reverse links monetary heritage and national governance by depicting the Capitol alongside historical currency motifs.
