The $500 Liberian banknote was officially issued on October 6, 2022, as a commemorative tribute to the seven women who designed the Liberian flag. The obverse features portraits of these pioneering women designers, led by Susanna Lewis who served as chairperson of the design committee, alongside Matilda Newport, Rachel Johnson, Mary Hunter, Mrs. J.B. Russwurm, Colonette Teage Ellis, and Sarah Draper. This historically significant design honors the often-overlooked female contributors to Liberia's national symbols and heritage. The reverse depicts an adult hippopotamus with her calf set against the backdrop of the Capitol Building in Monrovia, along with the Central Bank of Liberia seal. The note measures 133 x 66 mm and employs sophisticated purple, blue, and yellow color tones. The $500 denomination features a green-to-blue windowed security thread with demetalized stars displaying pulsing and dynamic color-changing effects when rotated at different angles, plus a see-through registration device with Liberian star fragments.
