Maldives 20 Rufiyaa

The Maldives Monetary Authority released a revised 20 rufiyaa polymer banknote dated July 31, 2025, entering circulation on February 17, 2026. The obverse features maritime economy imagery including a fisherman carrying skipjack and yellowfin tuna catch, a cowry shell (Cyprea moneta) historically significant in Maldivian commerce, and a jet airplane at takeoff from Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (now officially called Velana International Airport). The reverse displays complementary maritime and economic themes.

The primary distinguishing feature of this 2025-2026 edition is the addition of the official Rufiyaa currency symbol (ރ) before the denomination numerals, making these among the first widely circulated notes to incorporate the newly adopted symbol. Printed on polymer substrate by De La Rue, the note measures 150 mm by 70 mm with a green coloration and carries the signature of MMA Governor Ahmed Munawar.
