The NZ$50 polymer banknote belongs to the Series 7 'Brighter Money' family released in 2016 by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Sir Apirana Ngata (1874–1950) was the first Maori person to earn a university degree and served as a Cabinet minister, championing Maori land rights, cultural revival, and education. He has appeared on the $50 note since 1999. The reverse celebrates New Zealand's unique biodiversity through the kokako (Callaeas wilsoni), a rare native bird found in Pureora Forest Park. The 2022-dated notes continue the same design with updated print runs.
