Launched in November 2023, this commemorative 50 Kina polymer banknote celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Bank of Papua New Guinea, which was established on November 1, 1973. The orange note honors Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, Papua New Guinea's first Prime Minister, with his portrait prominently displayed. The obverse features the coat of arms with bird of paradise and the National Parliament building in Port Moresby alongside a golden '50 YEARS' logo. The reverse displays cultural treasures including spears from Sepik, shields and masks from New Ireland, Tubuan face masks from New Britain, headdress from the Highlands, and costumes from the Sepik River.
