50 Kina

Papua New Guinea issued this commemorative 50 Kina polymer banknote on August 28, 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of the nation's independence (September 16, 1975) and the 50th anniversary of the national currency. The note enters circulation and is legal tender alongside special numismatic packaging for collectors.

The obverse features Papua New Guinea's coat of arms (the bird of paradise perched on the Kundu drum and ceremonial spear), the National Parliament building in Port Moresby, the Raggiana Bird of Paradise (the national bird), Queen Alexandra's butterfly (the world's largest), and the Blue Orchid. The 50 YEARS anniversary logo is prominently displayed on the front.

The reverse depicts Sir Michael Somare, Papua New Guinea's founding Prime Minister, alongside cultural artifacts representing the nation's diversity—spears from the Sepik region, shields and masks from New Ireland, Tubuan face masks from New Britain, headdresses from the Highlands, and masks and costumes from the Sepik River.

Manufactured by Note Printing Australia, this Guardian polymer substrate banknote measures 145 × 70 mm and contains no security thread but features a watermark of the Bank of Papua New Guinea logo. A total of 20 million commemorative notes were issued alongside 20 million 50 toea coins.
