The new 100-ruble banknote was unveiled and entered legal circulation on June 30, 2022, as part of the Bank of Russia's planned 2022–2025 modernization of the entire ruble banknote series. The note is dedicated to Moscow and the broader Central Federal District, replacing the earlier 1997-series 100-ruble note which featured the Bolshoi Theatre. A notable design detail places the Spasskaya Tower chimes at 20:22, a cryptic but intentional reference to the year of issue. For the first time in the history of Russian banknotes, a QR code was incorporated as both an informational and security element.
