The blue 100 Rand note entered circulation on 4 May 2023 as part of the SARB's Eighth Series security upgrade, which modernised all five denominations simultaneously. The obverse features Nelson Mandela's portrait with constitutional text and flag imagery arranged in rings, two Cape buffalo depicted in SPARK Live Truspin colour-shifting ink, and the national coat of arms with a hexagonal registration device containing a buffalo. The reverse depicts two Cape buffalo with a buffalo-in-hexagon registration device, measuring 146 x 70 mm.
