The 20 Rand note entered circulation on 4 May 2023 as part of the South African Reserve Bank's Eighth Series upgrade of the Mandela banknote family. The obverse features Nelson Mandela's portrait with rings composed of the South African flag and constitutional preamble text, alongside the national coat of arms and two elephants rendered in SPARK Live Truspin colour-changing ink. The reverse depicts three African elephants, representing the elephant as one of the iconic Big Five animals and symbolising strength and wisdom.
