The 50 Rand note was released into circulation on 4 May 2023 as part of the SARB's Eighth Series upgrade, introducing advanced SPARK Live Truspin colour-shifting animal features and a new RollingStar security thread across all five denominations. The obverse displays Nelson Mandela's portrait surrounded by constitutional text and the South African flag arranged in rings, with two lions depicted in SPARK Live Truspin ink. The reverse shows a family of two lions, reflecting a design philosophy of depicting family groups of each Big Five animal and symbolising excellence and courage.
