The Bank of South Sudan first introduced the 1,000-pound denomination in February 2021 to address rampant inflation and reduce reliance on large volumes of lower-denomination notes. A 2023 reissue updated the currency name from 'South Sudanese pound' to 'South Sudan pound' in compliance with the Bank of South Sudan Act 2023, while retaining the same maroon design (158 x 82 mm) with Dr. John Garang de Mabior and a Dinka warrior spear on the obverse and two ostriches on the reverse. Both the original and the renamed version are concurrently valid legal tender.
