The 500 South Sudanese Pounds note was first introduced in 2018 by the Bank of South Sudan to ease high-value daily transactions amid inflationary pressure, and the 2023 edition represents an updated signature variant bearing new Governor and Minister signatures. The obverse honours Dr. John Garang de Mabior, the legendary leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Army and founding father of South Sudan's independence movement, alongside a traditional Dinka warrior spear as a symbol of national identity. The reverse features the River Nile, one of Africa's greatest waterways running through South Sudan, and the note measures 150 x 75 mm.
