The 20 Baht polymer banknote was issued into circulation on March 24, 2022, as part of Thailand's 17th banknote series. It is the first denomination of this series and Thailand's return to polymer substrate after earlier experiments. The switch from paper to polymer was driven by the fact that the 20 Baht note is the most widely circulated denomination in Thailand — accounting for more than 30% of all banknotes in circulation — meaning paper notes wear out within 2–3 years, whereas polymer notes are expected to last 5–7.5 years. The design continues the Rama X series tradition of pairing the reigning monarch on the obverse with a revered earlier king on the reverse.
