The 500 Hryvnia 2021 commemorative banknote was issued by the National Bank of Ukraine to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Hryhorii Skovoroda (1722–1794), Ukraine's most celebrated philosopher and itinerant teacher. Skovoroda studied at and later maintained ties with the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy — depicted on the reverse — which was a leading center of Orthodox learning in Eastern Europe. The note was printed in a limited edition of 50,000 pieces, of which 30,000 were packaged in commemorative souvenir folders. It incorporates all security features of the 2015 standard 500 hryvnia series, supplemented with the anniversary logotype printed in optically variable metallic ink that shifts from light green to dark green.
