The 50 Pesos Uruguayos polymer banknote features Jose Pedro Varela (1845-1879), a celebrated Uruguayan sociologist, journalist, politician, and education reformer, with a large portrait on the obverse and a smaller image in a clear window. The reverse depicts the Monument to Jose Pedro Varela in Montevideo. Printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire on polymer (Guardian substrate) measuring 144 x 68 mm in red, blue, green, and orange tones, this note was issued as part of the regular circulation series update alongside the 20-peso note, replacing the 2015 paper issue series with improved security features.
