West African States — Mali 500 Francs CFA

The 500 Francs CFA banknote was introduced by BCEAO on November 30, 2012, as a new denomination addition to the CFA franc banknote range. It was created in response to demand from the West African population for a smaller denomination banknote, complementing the existing 500 Francs CFA coin that had replaced the previous banknote denomination in 2003. The yellow-orange colored note is printed on high-quality banknote paper stock.

The obverse depicts the outline of the African continent alongside imagery representing modern technology and development, including a tablet computer, symbolizing Africa's technological advancement and digital transformation. These forward-looking design elements reflect BCEAO's commitment to presenting West Africa as a continent embracing modernity and innovation.

The reverse features a naturalistic scene of hippopotamuses, representing the diverse wildlife of the West African region and emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. Hippopotamuses are native to several WAEMU member states including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea-Bissau, where they inhabit river systems and wetlands. The banknote incorporates modern security features and standards established by BCEAO, designed to prevent counterfeiting while remaining accessible to the general population.
