Zimbabwe 2 ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold)

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe's April 5, 2024 announcement regarding the new ZiG currency outlined plans for eight denominations, with the 2 ZiG initially projected as a potential banknote denomination. However, this denomination was subsequently issued exclusively as a coin on April 30, 2024, minted in nickel-plated steel as part of the ZiG circulation coinage system alongside 1 ZiG and 5 ZiG denominations.

This decision reflected the Reserve Bank's monetary policy strategy to manage inflation and economic stability during the currency transition from the Zimbabwean dollar to the ZiG. The Reserve Bank maintained that restricting higher denominations to coin form would prevent the release from fueling inflation while still providing necessary denominations for daily transactions. The ZiG was Zimbabwe's sixth attempt at a stable currency since 2009, backed by gold reserves and foreign currency.

The 2 ZiG coin represented a mid-range value within the coin family, bridging transactions between the 1 ZiG and 5 ZiG. Only banknote denominations of 10 ZiG and 20 ZiG were released to the public in April 2024. The coin's design features Zimbabwe's national symbols including the Zimbabwe Bird and imagery from the Great Zimbabwe ruins at Domboremari, connecting the new currency to the nation's historical heritage.
