200 ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold)
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe included the 200 ZiG as the highest denomination in the original eight-denomination ZiG banknote series announced on April 5, 2024. Its release was postponed on May 30, 2024, alongside the 50 and 100 ZiG notes, as the Reserve Bank determined that introducing large-value denominations during the currency's initial phase could fuel inflationary expectations and undermine the ZiG's market acceptance. This reflected monetary policy conservatism aimed at ensuring the gold-backed currency achieved credibility before high-value notes entered circulation.
The Reserve Bank's strategy for the ZiG involved a deliberate two-phase approach: first establishing the currency's credibility and public acceptance through limited denomination circulation, then expanding to higher values as economic indicators improved. The 200 ZiG represented the pinnacle of this expansion plan, requiring the highest level of monetary confidence before release.
As of 2026, the 200 ZiG has not been released and remains in planned status. The Reserve Bank has indicated that higher denominations including the 200 ZiG may eventually be introduced in the BiG5 or subsequent series, but only when macroeconomic conditions and currency stability metrics fully support such action. Zimbabwe's history of hyperinflation means any decision to release higher denominations is made with extraordinary caution.
