5 ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold)
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe's announcement of the ZiG currency on April 5, 2024 outlined plans for the gold-backed Zimbabwe Gold currency across multiple denominations. The 5 ZiG denomination was issued exclusively as a circulation coin on April 30, 2024, minted in nickel-plated steel. This decision was part of the Reserve Bank's comprehensive monetary policy strategy to introduce the gold-backed ZiG currency while managing inflationary pressures during the transition period.
The 5 ZiG coin served as the highest-value denomination within the three-coin family (1, 2, 5 ZiG), designed for everyday retail and commercial transactions. The Reserve Bank's decision to limit banknote circulation to 10 ZiG and 20 ZiG denominations, while postponing higher denominations (50, 100, 200 ZiG), reflected concern that releasing additional banknotes could undermine currency stability and fuel inflation in an economy with a history of hyperinflationary episodes.
The ZiG was backed by a combination of USD 100 million in foreign currency reserves and 2,522 kilograms of gold held by the Reserve Bank, providing tangible backing for the new currency. The gold-backing mechanism represented a significant departure from previous Zimbabwean dollar iterations and was designed to build public confidence in the new monetary system. The 5 ZiG coin features Zimbabwe's national symbols, including the Zimbabwe Bird and Great Zimbabwe ruins imagery.
