Zimbabwe 50 ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold)

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe announced the 50 ZiG denomination as part of the original eight-denomination ZiG banknote series unveiled on April 5, 2024. However, the Reserve Bank postponed its release on May 30, 2024, citing inflationary concerns that higher denomination circulation could destabilize the economy during the currency's critical early adoption phase. The 50 ZiG was held in reserve, along with the 100 and 200 ZiG denominations, while only the 10 and 20 ZiG notes entered initial circulation.

By early 2026, economic conditions had improved significantly, with official inflation declining substantially, enabling the Reserve Bank to reconsider its conservative approach. The 50 ZiG was released as part of the new BiG5 second-generation series in 2026, featuring enhanced security features and updated designs compared to the original 2024 specifications. This delayed emission reflected monetary policy priorities aimed at establishing currency credibility before introducing higher-value notes.

The ZiG currency was backed by a combination of USD 100 million in foreign currency and 2,522 kilograms of gold, representing a significant departure from Zimbabwe's previous unsupported currency regimes. The phased introduction strategy demonstrated the Reserve Bank's commitment to sustainable monetary policy following Zimbabwe's turbulent currency history.
